To Love a Life Not by Comparison

I’ve never really loved the 4th of July. Not because of the holiday that falls on it, but because of the expectation surrounding it. I think my most significant realization is that true “independence” comes with bouts of loneliness. And if this day is meant to celebrate independence, maybe I shouldn’t rely on others to celebrate it.

My parents have been going through a bunch of health difficulties over the past few years. I guess that’s par for the course as we collectively get older, yet rational thinking doesn’t make it any easier for my emotional self. At times I feel like I’m handling everything pretty sanely (only focused on what I personally can control about the situation), while others I feel like I’m compartmentalizing and just avoiding dealing with things altogether.
